Beltline Crossing Removal at “Secret Canyon”

Funds awarded:
$15,000

Project date:
2000-2001

Sponsor:
Department of Water Resources

Project Description:
A $15,000 grant from the Department of Water Resources, along with in-kind donations from SWAG, Shasta College, and the City of Redding, allowed a landform restoration project on Secret Canyon, a small tributary of Sulphur Creek. Approximately 10,000 cubic yards of road fill was excavated from the stream crossing and placed on adjacent, revegetated cutslopes. Nearly 300 feet of stream channel was unearthed (“daylighted”) as the natural form and function of the tributary canyon was restored. Watershed Restoration students used biotechnical techniques, such as live staking, pole planting, and brushlayering, to stabilize the daylighted streambanks. A community “Planting Day” drew 50 volunteers who helped plant native vegetation of the restored slopes.
