Old Route 99 Road to Trail Sediment Reduction Project
Funds awarded:
$273,000
Project date:
2002-2003
Sponsor:
Department of Water Resources
Project Description:
Old Highway 99, abandoned and unmaintained for over 60 years, runs parallel along the western side of North Market Street. There are several sites along the highway that have a high potential to erode and could deliver an estimated 20,000 cubic yards of sediment of Sulphur Creek, jeopardizing downstream habitat enhancement projects. The project will remove the Old Highway 99 roadbed, reconstruct a 14-foot wide trail, and use biotechnical soil stabilization techniques to secure eroding areas. An estimated 5,000 cubic yards of sediments, backed up behind abandoned culverts, will be removed, restoring hydrological function to the tributary. Additionally, SWAG will monitor a fuels reduction program along the completed recreation trail.
